We as humans are obsessed with flight. One of my favorite quotes is:
In our dreams we are able to fly . . . and that is a remembering of how we were meant to be.
— Madeleine L'Engle, Walking on Water: Reflections on Faith and Art
Maybe it stems from my secret dream of being a stunt woman (or a spy) but I have always been fascinated with anything wired or bungee-esque. I want to fly. I am completely obsessed with flight. Space shuttles, dirigibles, skydiving, gliders and planes amaze me. I can sit and watch planes take off and land all day long. My Father has a love for dirigibles as well so maybe it runs in the family. The funny thing is that I despise actual bungee jumping, it makes me ill...maybe it's the recoil factor? Regardless bungee dancing is a whole other ball game. When Tomb Raider came out and Angelina was working her bungee-ballet-magic, in her home, I thought"Crap now I'm going to have to move to a place with higher ceilings!". It looked amazing it seemed almost like flying! Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon would have nothing on me, I would fight and dance in the bamboo forest!
The closest I have ever gotten to it was goofing around with some stunt machines at WESTefx while I was working on a show. It wasn't a bungee system but a system with a harness that snapped you back at a crazy speed as if you were kicked by someone in The Matrix...very cool. I love this kind of stuff. I was hooked. Seeing as my ceilings are not quite high enough to install a rig and add to the fact that I have absolutely no idea what I would be doing, I decided I should set out and find someone who did. Someone I could take a lesson from - a professional. I need to find this, need to try it out. Recently while surfing around You Tube I came across a bunch of videos of wire or bungee assisted dance so now I am truly on the hunt for a studio to try this out.
Am I the only one...does anyone want to join me in my quest for flight?
It has not been an easy search. There seems to be many options for bungee trapeze but just straight bungee is a harder prospect. I was surprised to find out I don't have a ton of options in LA. My ultimate goal is to go to England and take classes at Wired Aerial Theatre. I am emailing them tomorrow. I will fly.
